February 5 we went to the St. Paul Winter Festival. It was quite the adventure! We hadn't really explored St. Paul aside from going to and from Alex's medical appointments. We finally found a place to park, completely bundled up against the the low single digit temperatures, only to discover Saint Paul's warm tunnel/skyway system that connects nearly the whole city. Before moving to Minnesota, my Uncle Keven had told us that St. Paul and Minneapolis are hamster cities. Now I understand why. :-)
We made it the park where the ice sculptures were and well... it was a little disappointing. Some of the sculptures were really cool but the numbers overall were small. This festival was SO talked up that it seemed like a little bit of a let down. Here are some pictures of the ones we really liked.
We thought that this was hilarious. What kind of birds don't fly south for the winter? Pigeons! They were huddled on this heating grate completely puffed out.
St. Paul is the home town of Charles Shultz and there are sculptures hidden around the city of his famous peanuts characters.
Only in Minnesota (well maybe Canada too), will you find children's pony rides in the middle of a frigid winter.
We decided to avoid the skyways (they may be warmer but they take longer) on the way back to the parking. We saw some fun old fire trucks.
This one was carrying the St. Paul Winter Carnival Vulcan Krew (not quite sure what/who they are, it may have something to do with hockey or something)....I guess I'm not a native Minnesotan yet.
